Nice & Smooth

Description

You can hear the pronounced chemistry between Greg Nice and Smooth B. on exuberant singles like "Early To Rise," and "Funky For You." The duo, along with DJ Teddy Ted, were able to color their songs with personality and humor, eventually gaining the attention of RAL Records, a subsidiary of Def Jam at the time. As legend has it, Tupac Shakur was so impressed by Greg Nice that he wanted to sign him on an eventual, unnamed label.

Released in 1989, the album was the pair's debut and eventually earned them a spot on The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums list. Songs like "Hip-Hop Junkies‚" were quickly striking, utilizing a Partridge Family sample to great melodic effect while others like "Ooh Child‚" were sonically minimal, showcasing Greg Nice's humorous yet detailed writing. While Smooth B. helmed the majority of the production, he did however add slow, sultry vocals on tracks adding smoothed-out narration and rounding the album's edges. Ultra-catchy hooks and vocals dripping with personality define this incredibly entertaining 15-track release. It's now available on limited edition 2LP color vinyl.
